Last year, upon his re-election as state president for a third term, Xi Jinping chose Russia for his first state visit. He publicly told President Putin, 'Right now there are changes—the likes of which we haven’t seen for 100 years—and we are the ones driving these changes together.'

This year, Vladimir Putin chose China for his first state visit after being inaugurated as President of Russia for a fifth term. He was accompanied by nearly his entire council of ministers and Russia’s leading captains of industry, technology, and finance. The delegation included Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Governor of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina, and his new Minister of Defence, Andrei Belousov.
